We took a trip up to the cottage over spring break. Even with the iPods, DVD players, books and toys cries of “I’m bored” sounded from the back seat. On our grocery run to Glen’s I was able to pick up the supplies for this craft. Poster board, fine tip markers, sheet protectors are the materials I found in the small school and office supply section. I cut the poster board so it fits in the page protector sleeve. Then I marked my five by five grid in the bottom of the sheet. I used things we saw on the trip up north as inspiration for the objects on my board. You can customize it to what you are likely to find in you area of travel. I sketched all the images in pencil first then went over them in marker. I grabbed the washable markers, and found that they are not as nice to write with, but I figured they would be good for the kids to use when I was done. They worked well enough though, and probably smudged less, since the one year old was constantly tugging on the board as I drew. Remember to make the center square in your board a Free space. I almost forgot it. When you are done, just slide the board into the protective sleeve and it’s ready to go. The kids can draw right on the sleeve with a dry erase marker, or use the circular stickers used for pricing items at garage sales. Then you can reuse them for your next road trip.

Crochet Mini Heart

Today I was crocheting some balls for my kids, when I had a whim to make some crochet hearts. I had already chained two and rather than stop and look up a pattern online, I decided to just improvise. I think it turned out well enough to share. I used Patons Classic Wool in Petal Pink with my H/8 hook. I think I will send the one with the hanging loop to my husband in his Valentine’s Day Care Package. That is, if my daughter doesn’t claim them all for her self!

Sketching with Colored Pencils

My five year old daughter loves to color and draw, so I joined her in drawing with colored pencils. The first pencil I picked up was Orchid which gave me the inspiration for my sketch. It is my goal this year to try and sketch a little bit each day. In high school my sketchbook was my constant companion, but since then I have rarely drawn much of anything. For being so rusty I was actually pretty impressed with this sketch, so I thought I would share it here. Feel free to tell me what you think. One thing I have gained in the years since I last sketched was thick skin. I can take criticism in stride. In high school I would have likely cried.

I wrote about it last week over on WordPress.org, but the gist is this: there’s a bill in the U.S. Senate that if passed would put publishing freedom severely at risk, and could shut down entire sites at the whim of media companies.

Hi and welcome to my brand spankin new blog. I just love to dabble in all sorts of crafts and I plan on sharing my crafts with you.

Today I am working on Crocheting a hat for my husband. He is in the army, and his shaved head gets cold, so I am making a hat to send out to him in Afghanistan. It is pretty cold there this time of year, so I’m sure he will appreciate it. I will post some more pictures when it is finished.

A nice short entry for Day One here, but I want to finish this hat!
